Elementary Music (K-4)


Grade-level Music Units:

Kindergarten: Alphabet letter songs, folk songs, nursery rhymes, steady beat, rhythm, volume, and basic musical vocabulary (Anchor songs - Name Game, Now It’s Time to Go, 7 Days of the Week)

1st GradeCarnival of the Animals by French composer Camille Saint-Saens, Instruments of the Orchestra (describing music we listen to and their qualities: high/low sounds, fast/slow tempo, smooth/choppy texture, loud/quiet dynamics), playing classroom instruments to accompany songs/games and reinforce beat and rhythm (Anchor Songs - various songs from Carnival of the Animals, We Are the Dinosaurs, Hello Seven, Yonder I Come)

2nd Grade: Rhythm notation review, Instruments of the Orchestra review, Peter and the Wolf by Ukrainian composer Sergei Prokofiev, Music From Around the World, reinforcement of continents, oceans, and countries through song, playing classroom instruments to accompany songs/games and reinforce beat and rhythm (Anchor Songs - The Alphabet of Nations, Yonder I Come, Glory to the Mountain, Hello My Friends Hello)

3rd Grade: Rhythm notation and steady beat review, the music staff and melodic notation, composition technique, introduction to Recorder Karate (teaches basic techniques used in wind instruments through the playing of 9 folk songs where students earn a colored “belt” displayed on their recorder to signify mastery of material), jazz music (April), playing classroom instruments to accompany songs/games and reinforce beat and rhythm focusing on mallet percussion (xylophones and metallophones) (Anchor Songs - Great Big House, Yonder I Come)

4th Grade: Rhythm notation and steady beat review, rhythmic patterns using Gordon system (du, du-de), introduction and intermediate Recorder Karate (teaches basic and intermediate techniques used in wind instruments through the playing of 9 folk songs where students earn a colored “belt” displayed on their recorder to signify mastery of material), cooperation through playing in a musical ensemble,  blues & jazz music (April) (Anchor Songs - Draw Me a Bucket)
